World Marathoner Tristan Miller on Marrakech

Looking for answers when he lost his job, Tristan Miller started running all over the world—literally, setting out to become  the first to run 52 marathons in 52 weeks, in the process raising money for UNICEF and hoofing it through some of our favorite destinations. In January alone, the 32-year-old Australian took a tour-de-foot of Zurich, Tiberias, Mumbai, Dubai, Gran Canaria, and Marrakech. On Feb. 1, the day after the Marrakech marathon, he shared his impressions of Morocco’s finest, after the jump. --Lisa Gartner
Food: Tristan was worried that the locale’s spicy food—though delicious—would interfere with his running. Not so: “I ate extraordinarily well, mostly around the main square in the middle of the Medina. At Chez Chegrouni, I had the tagine meat with vegetables, slow cooked in their own juices.”

Nightlife: “The square is full of all the madness you’d expect. There are street performers, musicians, snake charmers, and monkey keepers. We hit a nightclub on Friday night called Theatro—it’s supposed to be the city’s best. The music is cool, and at about 1:30, crazy actors in bizarre outfits grind metal to create a spark-driven show.”

Sights: “The marathon ran right around the old city walls and into the Palmeraie where many of the resorts are. Marrakech is a bustling little city, so to have so many people make way for the race was really impressive. Afterward, walking down the backstreets of the Medina was quite an experience in itself, as the streets twist and turn like a maze.”

Hotel: Riad Puchka is a pretty little place. In the center courtyard, there's a beautiful pool and 'garden' of tiles complete with palm trees, a dining area, bar, lounge, and even a Jacuzzi. Normally a cold pool would put me off, but it was the closest thing I could get to an ice bath, so I got in waste deep. Perfect!”
